Background:

A two-dimensional picture has to be larger than life if it is to evoke a response from four of our senses.  You can almost touch, smell and taste a good photograph of food or drink.  The aim is to prepare the best possible ingredients, place them in an appealing setting, zoom close to show every pore and drop of detail, and light the subject to bring out its texture and color.  Soft, diffused overhead lighting makes food look natural, and is a good starting point for experimentation.  Carefully chosen props such as herbs and spices, cutlery and condiments enhance a display of food and drink.  Fruit can be made appetizingly moist by brushing it with glycerin or spraying it with a fine water spray.

Pointers:

  • Squirting sliced fruit with lemon juice stops it from turning brown.

  • Shaving foam can be used in place of whipped cream, and add gelatin to keep beer froth in place.

  • To simulate steam, blow cigarette smoke down a tube into or behind the food.

  • Use a dark background to highlight steam.

  • Electronic flash is easier on food as it is cool and will stop movement.  Add tungsten light to give it a warm glow or to color the background.
