Photojournalism entries shall consist of images or sequences of images with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The journalistic value of the image shall receive priority over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, images that misrepresent the truth and model or staged set-ups are not permitted.

Note: Entrants are cautioned that the previous sentence includes any images that appear to be posed. Entrants are therefore advised that such images are likely to be disqualified (DQed).

Notes: Although the storytelling value of a PJ image must predominate and be present for the image to receive a high score, a PJ image must still be technically correct and well-composed. Note that posed images will be DQ'ed or receive a low score - to ensure a judge does not erroneously assume an image is posed, it is good practice not to have subjects looking straight into the camera. Although sports action images are not permitted into PJ Human Interest, not all images of sports participants are considered sports action - thus, for example, a photo of a boy in baseball uniform crying off the field woudl not be considered sports action..
